When I said I wanted to spend some money on grimdark wargaming miniatures, my partner said ok. Then there was a pause, and they added “Don’t get into it”.
I went to the wargaming miniature store the next day. Due to the pandemic I was the only person in the store. I got a lot of individual attention from the clerk. The place had a lot in common with a Jet Ski dealership. High touch. A “treat yourself” vibe. Vegas.
My parents taught me to mistrust luxuries - the idea of luxury is a retreat from responsibility, a dangerous childishness, a regression. A luxury that is literally toy soldiers is a bit on the nose.
To partake in luxury is to forget the wolf at the door. Forgetting the wolf doesn’t make it go away.
