There are plenty of horror movies about having a bad father, but very few about being a bad father. Ethan Hawke manages to make terrible mistakes as a partner and parent and still keep the viewer interested.
Sinister is a simple, fairly unambitious movie about a writer letting his egomania destroy his family while he attempts a great, ambitious work. The themes evoke The Shining, which casts a long and distracting shadow.
