Rock and roll is dead. This movie was made in last moment of the 90's in America, when we could see the monoculture breaking down but before we gave ourselves back to the war cult. There was a point when we thought we could change, but didn't know quite what we would change into. Hedwig was released at this point, the last moment when the story of rock and roll was worth telling. It is absurd and sublime.
