Halloween

Weird Ritual. 1920-2020

Halloween is an emergent observance. It is a wild phenomenon, not a state holiday or a church holiday. Its fundamental ritual is extortion. The institutional support of Halloween is mostly a way to keep people from committing crimes. Halloween is safe and joyful and full of delight.

The plague takes away our observances. No going home for Thanksgiving this year. This isn’t too shocking: Thanksgiving, July 4th, Arbor Day, National Tooth Decay Awareness Week, all of them are part of an order, and Covid breaks order. But how can it also take Halloween, the holiday of crime? It seems unfair.

Covid-19 is some bullshit.
